Abstract
Key Words: Reading Comprehension, Student-Teams Achievement Division Method Reading comprehension is one of important basic language skills used by students in English lesson. However, some of the students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the academic year of 2014/2015 is still low such as the lack of the teacher encouragement toward the student in reading activities and the difficulties of the students to comprehend the text. So the importance of helping the teacher for reading activities well and the students for the reading comprehension task well. One of the way is by using appropriate method for teaching learning process. Student-Teams Achievement Division method is a cooperative method that often used to make class life and make the students work cooperatively in teaching and learning. In accordance to the facts above, the reseacher formulated the statements of the problem, they are: (1) Does STAD Method improve students’ reading comprehension at eighth grade of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the academic year of 2014/2015?; and (2) How can STAD Method improve students’ reading comprehension at eighth grade of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the academic year of 2014/2015?. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) to apply STAD method. This subject was the students at the eighth grade students of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the academic year of 2014/2015 that consist of 16 students. The research was started on August, 13th, 14th, 20th 2014, and August 27th, 28th, September 3rd 2014. This research was conducted in two cycles and used three research instruments. They were observation checklist, questionnaire, and test. In cycle 1, the result of students’ observation score is 70%. It show that during teaching and learning process, the students has active enough. The result of questionnaire score is 62.5%. It show that the students are not enjoying. From the students’ test result, there are 9 students can reach and 7 students can not reach of basic criteria minimum or KKM. It mean that this research has not successful. In cycle 2, the students’ result of observation checklist is 100%. It show that the students are more active than before. Questionnaire score is 70%. It show that the students are very enjoying and interest in studying English, especially in reading comprehension on narrative text. The students’ percentage of test who get the minimum score based on KKM is 100%. It mean that the students’ achievements are very satisfying and it is successful. Finally, the researcher make a conclusion that: (1) STAD method can improve students’ reading comprehension; (2) STAD method make students active involve reading class and it make students can comprehend the text well.
