Abstract
This study aims to apply the PBL model as a strategy to improve the problem solving ability of students in class VIIIA at SMPN 2 Kawedanan. Mathematical problem solving is an important skill that needs to be mastered by students in facing real world challenges and developing students' potential as critical thinking individuals. This study used a qualitative approach through the Classroom Action Research (PTK) method with the subject of 20 students of class VIIIA at SMPN 2 Kawedanan. The research was conducted in several cycles which included planning, implementation, observation, and reflection for the effectiveness of the PBL model in improving students' mathematical problem solving skills. Data collection techniques in this study were tests and non-tests while the instruments used to collect data included a post-test on problem solving skills and an observation sheet of learning implementation. The results of this study indicate that the learning process in cycle 1 of group formation by the teacher experienced a tendency to be less adaptable in their groups, students were less cooperative in their groups. This is inversely proportional during cycle 2 because at the group division stage students choose their own group mates, students look more comfortable when in a group with their friends, and students are more adaptable to their groups and can cooperate with their group mates. In addition to changes in group formation, changes outside the application of the PBL model, namely the teacher provides rewards to increase the spirit of learning and foster student motivation to learn. the ability to understand students' problems obtained an average score in cycle 1 was 90% increased in cycle 2 the average score to 97.5% with a very good category, the ability to plan student problem solving obtained an average score in cycle 1 was 55% increased in cycle 2 the average score to 95% with a very good category, the ability to carry out problem solving plans from all students obtained an average in cycle 1 was 65% increased in cycle 2 the average score to 80% with a good category, while students in making conclusions in cycle I was 55% increased in cycle 2 the average score to 75% and included in the good category. This study shows that the application of the PBL learning model can improve students' mathematical problem solving skills.
