Abstract

Keywords : Motivation, Extensive Reading As English skill, reading is important, because by reading the students get a lot of information or knowledge. Then, the students can improve their reading ability by extensive reading, because they can read a lot and also try to understand the text. Further, motivation is important to influence reading skill, because when people do not have motivation they do not want to read. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to describe the students’ strategies in sustaining motivation in Extensive Reading Class of English Education Department at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Motivation is encouragement which comes from students themselves or effect of their experience or environment which pushes students to do some work in order to achieve something. Then, extensive reading is reading in great quantity in order to gain and understand what is read. This research used qualitative method. The data was conducted in English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. The subject of this research were of the sixth semester students, that consist of 5 male and 18 female. This research used observation, questionnaire, and interview as the technique collection data and used Miles and Huberman Model as the data analysis. The problems of sixth semester students during reading novel were the students did not understand plot of story in novel, the students did not understand the meaning of unfamiliar words, the students did not understand the grammatical in novel. So, it made the students less motivation in reading novel. Therefore, they created some strategies, they were: choosing novel, reading synopsis, reading novel in pleasure time, remembering their target when they less their motivation, and reading in focus. All of the students’ strategies could help the students to solve their problems during reading novel. Choosing novel strategy was the strategy which most students (ten students) who applied it. Thus, by those strategies the students could increase and sustain their motivation in reading. Then, they might also sustain their motivation both in reading novel or other books. Furthermore, the lecturer should create the variation of learning process and help the students in sustaining their motivation by giving tricks to read novel in order the students did not feel bored in reading novel.
