Abstract
Key words: Pair Check Method, Reading Ability. Reading is an interactive process going on between a reader and text. The reader is required to use knowledge, skills, and strategies to decode what the meaning is. Many students in junior high school have difficulty in studying reading. Based on the observation at the Eight grade students of SMP N 4 Jatisrono, the researcher found some problems in learning reading, such as: the students were lazy to read, and they got difficulties in understanding a text and comprehending the meaning of words in the text. The students often feel bored and tired because teaching learning process at the eight grade students of SMP N 4 Jatisrono in 2013/2014 academic year especially reading comprehension is still conducted by applying monotonous method. In English we can use strategy as a tool to improve the students’ skill. In this case, it will take pair check method. On this strategy, the researcher explains to the students that they will use this strategy to understand the narrative text. The statement of problem is how is the implementation of pair check method to improve students’ reading ability at the eight grade students of SMP N 4 Jatisrono in 2013/2014 academic year and the purpose of this research is to know the Implementation of Pair Check method to improve students’ reading ability at the eight grade students of SMP N 4 Jatisrono in 2013/2014 academic year. The subject of this research was the students of eight grade of SMP N 4 Jatisrono in 2013/2014 academic year which consisted of 31 students. The research was conducted on 17th April until 22nd May, 2014 in two cycles. The writer uses three research instruments. There are observation check list, questionnaire, and test. Based on the result of this research, the implementation of pair check method can improve students reading ability in SMPN 4 Jatisrono. It was seen from the improvement of average of students’ score from 58.38 in cycle 1 up to 84.51 in cycle 2. The questionnaire result showed that students enjoyed and became active during teaching learning process. Finally, using pair check method in teaching reading was effective in teaching reading and this strategy can actually improve the students’ reading ability. The writer is aware that this thesis is lack of perfection. Therefore the writer expects the criticism and suggestion that can build or develop this thesis for perfecting. The writer also hopes that this thesis will be useful for the readers.
