Abstract

Key words: Reading Skill, Story Pyramid Reading is one of important language skills used by students in English lesson. Teaching reading in SMPN 2 Dolopo faced some problems in learning process of reading comprehension. One of them was when students read the English text, they did not understand the content of the text because of lack of vocabulary mastery and the English teacher usually used monotonous method. To solve the problem above the researcher used Story Pyramid to teach reading. The statement of problem of this research is: How can story pyramid improve the eight grade students’reading skill at SMPN 2 Dolopo inacademic year2014/2015. The purpose of study is to the purpose of study is to find out how story pyramid can improve the eighth grade students’reading skill at SMPN 2 DOLOPO in academic year2014/2015. The research design used by researcher is classroom action research. It consisted of several steps covering planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The research was done in SMP N 2 Dolopo started on May 13th 2015 until May 27th 2015. The subject in this research is class VIII that consists of 30 students. The research was conducted in two cycles. The writer used three instruments. There are Observation, Questionnaire and Test. The criteria of success in this research were if the sum of students who had passed the passing grade (tuntas) was ≥75%. Based on the result of the research, the eight year students of SMPN 2 Dolopo were able to read the text better after applied Story pyramid. The result of students’ test in cycle I, there were 17 students (62.96%) who got score more than the minimum mastery criteria (KKM) and 10 students (37.03%) who got score lower than the minimum mastery criteria (KKM). The highest score was 90 obtained by eight students. The result of students’ test in cycle II, there were 26 students (100%) who got score more than minimum mastery criteria (KKM). The highest score was 100 obtained by ten students. It means there was improvement from cycle 1 to cycle II. It means that the study has been successful. Finally, the researcher suggests for the English teachers that can be applied story pyramid in teaching reading narrative text. Besides, English teacher should always give motivation to the students to learn English well and understand student’s need and characteristics. The students may use story pyramid method when reading narrative text. They should also learn more about English to add their knowledge. To Next Researcher, this thesis can be a reference for those who whould like to continue this research or conduct a research with some case.
