Abstract

Key Words: Speaking ability, Series Picture Technique Speaking is a productive skill in learning language that consists of producing systematic verbal utterance to convey meaning. Speaking is a way to show the intention through spoken words. Speaking is one of the most difficult aspects for students to master. This is hardly surprising when one considers everything that is involved when speaking: ideas, what to say, language, how to use grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation as well as listening to and reacting to the person who are communicating with. In teaching Speaking, the teacher can use suitable technique to improve students’ competence in Speaking. The technique is series picture. Series picture are a set of parallel picture showing similar scene or story that offer guidance on vocabulary, structure and organization. This technique is very enjoyable for students because they can express their ideas in front of the class based on the series pictures which they see. The statement of problem of this research is how does the implementation of Series Picture technique improve students’ speaking ability at MTs Sunan Kalijaga Bulukerto in the Academic Year of 2015/2016? The purpose of this research is to improve students’ speaking ability using series picture technique at ninth grade of MTs Sunan Kalijaga Bulukerto in the Academic Year of 2015/2016. The subject of the research was the ninth grade students of MTs Sunan Kalijaga Bulukerto in academic year of 2015/2016 especially class A which consisted of 27 students. The research was started on August 6th, 2015 until 15th, 2015. This research was conducted in two cycles. The researcher used three research instruments; they were observation check list, questionnaire, and test. Based on the result of this research, the implementation of series picture technique could improve students’ speaking ability at the ninth grade students of MTs Sunan Kalijaga Bulukerto. It was seen from the improvement of average of students’ score from 51.85% in cycle I up to 100% in cycle II. The questionnaire result showed that students enjoyed and became active during teaching learning process. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion that English teachers can use series picture technique as an alternative method in teaching speaking. The next researcher can develop this method.
