Abstract
Abstract Tobacco plants are plantation crops that are widely cultivated by farmers in Indonesia because of their high economic value. However, the process of manually chopping tobacco takes a long time and produces non-uniform results. Therefore, a portable tobacco chopping machine is needed to increase farmer efficiency and productivity. This research involves designing and manufacturing a portable tobacco chopping machine that is driven by an electric motor using one blade. Measurements were carried out to determine the rpm speed of the motor axle and the thickness of the tobacco slices. Tests were carried out to assess the efficiency and performance of chopping machines with various voltages. The designed tobacco chopping machine succeeded in increasing chopping efficiency by significantly reducing the time required compared to manual methods. The machine produces shredded tobacco with a uniform thickness of around 3 mm. The use of a 200V AC motor has proven to be the most effective, although the machine still functions at a lower voltage. This portable tobacco chopping machine is expected to make a significant contribution to improving the welfare of tobacco farmers in Indonesia through increasing efficiency and productivity. This machine has good durability and low maintenance costs. Further development is recommended to improve the blade design and materials and add safety features to the machine.
