Abstract
Zain, Lubby Anwar, 2024, Students' Strategies in Overcoming the Difficulty in Understanding the Scientific Terms in Journal Articles, A Case Study of English Education Department Students’ at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Thesis. English Education Department, Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Advisors: (1) Niken Reti Indriastuti, M.Pd. (2) Dr. Bambang Harmanto, M.Pd. Keywords: Strategies, Scientific Terms, Journal Articles Nowadays students are required to write and read academic writing, students need to learn scientific terminology to fully understand the concepts, theories, and research findings reported in scholarly journal. A strategy must focus on the right selection, namely choosing to be the best in a particular segment and ignoring other segments that are not under the company's competitive advantage also emphasizes the importance of efficient and effective resource management to support the implementation of the chosen strategy. The purpose of this study was to explore students' strategies for understanding scientific terms in journal articles and to find out what problems students face in understanding scientific terms in journal articles. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative research design especially a case study, with data collection through Questionnaire and Interview. The research subjects were English language education students from the class of 2020 and 2021 at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo with a total of 36 students, 16 students from the sixth-semester and 20 students from the eighth-semester. The research results revealed differences in strategies used by students. The majority favored the Problem-Solving Strategy, scoring 3.84, indicating high frequency use. The Support Strategy also had a high frequency score of 3.57. The Global Reading Strategy scored 3.34, indicating medium frequency use. Key issues in understanding scientific terms in journal articles included unfamiliarity with new and complex terms, especially in fields like medicine. To overcome these difficulties, students used translation, searched for definitions online, and sought clarification from peers or instructors. The research concluded that students predominantly use Problem-Solving and Support Strategies with high frequency, while Global Reading Strategies are used with medium frequency. Key challenges in understanding scientific terms include unfamiliarity with complex terminology, particularly in specialized fields like medicine. To address these issues, students commonly employ strategies such as translation, online searches for definitions, and seeking clarification from peers or instructors.
