Key Words: Reading Comprehension, GIST strategy. Reading is one of the important skills in English and it gives many benefits for us. To master reading, students need to have reading desire and must be tried to read something intensive and continually. Strategy is a very important component in the learning process that must be developed creatively by teachers. In the development of learning, a teacher is free to modify it based on the students needs or classes condition. If the learning strategy and design are chosen appropriately, students' interest of learning will increase and it will increase students' achievement. In teaching reading, we can use strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension. The strategy is GIST (Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text). GIST is strategy for supporting comprehension of informational text. GIST is helpful where students are required to read long texts containing a significant amount of new information. The statement of problem of this research was how GIST strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension at seventh grade of SMP N 1 Siman in academic year 2012/2013 and the purpose of this research was to know the implementation of GIST (Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text) able improve students’ reading comprehension at seventh grade of SMPN 1 Siman in academic year 2012/2013 The subject of this research was the students of the seventh grade of SMP N 1 Siman in academic year 2012/2013 which consisted of 24 students. The research was started on April 30rd, 2013 until Mei 8th, 2013. This research was conducted in two cycles. The writer used three research instruments. There are observation check list, questionnaire, and test. Based on the result of this research, the implementation of GIST (Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text) strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension in SMP N 1 Siman Ponorogo, it was seen from the improvement of average of students’ score from 69.73 in cycle I up to 83.25 in cycle II. The questionnaire result showed that students enjoyed and become active during teaching learning process. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion that English teachers can use GIST (Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text) as alternative strategy in teaching reading. The next researcher can develop this strategy by using various kinds of the media to get the better result in teaching learning process.
