Abstract

Rahmawati, Septa Eka. 2013. Improving Students’ Writing Skill Using Information Gap Technique At The Tenth Grade Of MA Ma’arif Balong In The Academic Year Of 2012/2013. Thesis. English Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Advisors: Siti Asiyah, M.Pd (1) Diyah Atiek Mustikawati, M.Hum (2) Key Words: Information Gap Technique, Writing Skill A preliminary study conducted at MA Ma’arif Balong had shown that the writing skill of the tenth grade students was still limited. They didn’t master enough in some writing skill aspects, such as grammatical function, content, vocabulary, punctuation mark, and coherence so that their writing skill were far from the minimal-standard score 70. Then, they were often less enthusiastic in participating of the teaching and learning writing. As the result, most of the students judged that the writing of procedure text was a difficult lesson. To overcome those problems, the researcher proposed Classroom Action Research (CAR). The researcher was going to describe the implementation of Information Gap Technique in teaching and learning writing, especially in a procedure text. Using the technique, the students felt more comfortable in the writing process and they were able to write well in order to improve the students’ writing skills. CAR was done in one cycle. The subjects of this research were students of grade XA. It consisted of 30 students with the composition 12 male students and 18 female students. Each cycle had four procedures, such as planning, acting, observing and reflecting. To collect the valid data, the researcher used research instruments, such as observation check list, field notes, test, and documentary. Based on the research result, in the cycle 1, the student’s attention, attitude, participation, and interaction of each student were still poor. The classical writing test only achieved 63,33. It meant that the researcher revised the cycle 1 to conduct cycle 2. Then, the researcher conducted cycle 2. The research results of cycle 2 shown that each student’s attention, attitude, participation, and interaction were very good. The classical score achieved the minimal-standard score 70, it was 74,33. It meant that all criteria of success were achieved well. It concluded that Information Gap Technique could improve the students’ writing skill of the tenth grade of MA Ma’arif Balong. Ultimately, the researcher suggested to the teachers to apply Information Gap Technique in teaching and learning English, especially in a procedure text.
