Key Words : PQ4R Strategy, Reading Comprehension Reading is intrinsic part of the classroom teaching of content. Everyone needs reading material to accelerate their lesson, finish their study, and increase their knowledge. Reading is also something crucial and indispensable for the students because the success of their study depends on the greater part of their ability to read. If their reading skill are poor, they are like to fail in their study or at least they will have difficulty in making progress. In teaching reading, the teacher can use strategy to increase students’ reading comprehension. The strategy is PQ4R strategy. PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, and Review) strategy targets the reader's ability to understand main ideas and supporting details by emphasizing paraphrasing comprehensions. The statement of problem of this research was “How can PQ4R strategy improve the students’ reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP N 1 Bungkal in academic year 201/2014” The purpose of this research was “to implement of PQ4R strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP N 1 Bungkal in academic year 2013/2014.” The subject of this research was the students of the eight grade in SMP N 1 Bungkal in academic year 2013/2014 which consisted of 41 students. The research was started on Februari 3rd, 2014 until Februari 13nd, 2014. This research used Classroom Action Research. This research was conducted in two cycles. The writers used three research instruments. There were observation check list, questionnaire, and test. This researcher used Classroom Action Research in the research in SMP N 1 Bungkal. Based on the result of this research, the implementation of PQ4R strategy can impove students’ reading comprehension in SMP N 1 Bungkal, it was seen from the improvement from cycle I-II. At the beginning of process (cycle I), the average of students’ score test was 66.78 and the final test (cycle II) was 77.51. The criteria of success was 76. It shown improving of PQ4R strategy was effective in teaching reading of average of students’ score from 66.78 in cycle I up to 77.51 in cycle II. The questionnaire result showed that students enjoyed during teaching learning process. And the result of observation checklist showed that most students were very active and serious in doing their tasks. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion that English teachers can use PQ4R strategy as alternative strategy in teaching reading.
