In learning English, the students must master the four basic skills, speaking is one of the first skills English students wish to acquire considering its crucial role. It is often considered difficult for EFL learners to master because students have to acquire other language components such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. This research aims to find out whether the implementation of the movie improves the student speaking skills of the fifth-grade students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Kenongomulyo. Using watching English movie techniques can be a potential strategy for teaching English speaking skills.
This research focused on improving students' speaking skills in the fifth grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Kenongomulyo through English movie. This research applied pre-experimental research. The research instrument is the test in the form of a pretest and posttest. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 18. To analyze the data, the researcher determined the scoring classification which includes accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility. The population of the research was the fifth-grade students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Kenongomulyo. The sample was 18 students from class fifth B.
The research results show that the probability value was 0.024 <0.05, so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, meaning that English movie effectively improved speaking ability. The student's average score on the pretest was 56.94, increasing to 59.44 on the post-test. Pronunciation scores slightly increased from the pre-test average of 2.83 to 3.06 at the post-test. Grammar skills showed slight improvement, with scores increasing from 2.89 to 2.94. Vocabulary scores remained relatively consistent, rising from 2.72 on the pre-test to 2.94 on the post-test. Fluency also showed slight improvement, increasing from 2.83 to 2.94. The mean score in the pre-test was lower than the mean score in the post-test (56,94 <59.44). The researcher found that the p-value was 0.024 and the alpha was 0.05, therefore p<a (0.024 < 0.05). The researcher concludes that English movies effectively improve students' speaking skills.
