COPD is an irreversible condition characterized by shortness of breath
during activities and disruption of the flow of air in and out of the lungs.
Supporting intervention for this nursing problem by setting the semi-Fowler
position is positioning the patient in a half-sitting position by supporting the head
and shoulders using a pillow. The aim of this research is to determine the
application of the Semi-Fowler position to reduce shortness of breath in COPD
patients with nursing problems with impaired breathing patterns in the Darwis
Room at RSU Muhammadiyah Ponorogo.
This study was conducted on November 13-17, 2024 in the Darwis Room
of Muhammadiyah Ponorogo Hospital. The respondent was Mr. J who
experienced nursing problems of ineffective breathing pattern disorders related to
dyspnea and would be given a semi-Fowler position. The instrument used
Standard Operating Procedures and observation sheets. The intervention was to
provide a semi-Fowler position to patient Mr. J.
The results of the nursing evaluation based on progress notes showed that,
after being in the semi-fowler's position for 3x24 hours, the indicator criteria for
the results were fully achieved, the respiratory frequency decreased, there were
no wheezing sounds, and the SPO2 increased, the patient did not feel short of
breath during activities.
Based on the objective and subjective data available to Mr. So the
researchers concluded that the nursing problem of disturbed breathing patterns
related to dyspnea was resolved. It is hoped that this case study can provide an
overview and become a reference in applying the semi-Fowler position to
overcome breathing pattern disorders.
