Abstract

As older adults age, they experience physical and cognitive decline,
such as dementia, which impacts their ability to perform activities of daily
living (ADL). This cognitive decline causes them to rely on others to meet their
basic daily needs. This study aims to analyze the relationship between dementia
and activities of daily living (ADL) in the elderly at UPT Social Services Tresna
Werdha Magetan.
The research design used in this study is descriptive correlational a
cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all elderly individual
whit dementia at UPT Social Services Tresna Werdha Magetan, tataling 30
respondents, selected using the total sampling technique. Data were collected
using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) questionnaire to assess the
level of dementia and the Barthel Index to measure activity of daily living
(ADL). The statistical test used wes the Spearman Rank correlation.
The results of this study indicate that majority of respondents with
dementia had mild cognitive impairment (14 respondents (46.7%), and
majority of respondents with activities of daily living (ADL) were still
independent (16 respondents (53.3%). The Spearman Rank test obtained a p
value of 0,000, indicating that p < α = 0,05 which rejects H0, which states that
“there is a significant relationship between dementia and activity of daily living
(ADL) in the elderly at UPT Social Services Tresna Werdha Magetan.
It is hoped that elderly people with dementia can maintain or improve
their ability to perform daily activities (ADL) and be motivated to maintain
their cognitive function to prevent further decline which could lead to the risk
of total dependency.
