Abstract
Teenage girls in the social media era are vulnerable to body shaming due to
unrealistic beauty standards. Negative comments about the body can reduce self-
efficacy, which is an individual's belief in their ability to face challenges. This
study aims to analyze the relationship between body shaming and self-efficacy
levels among teenage girls in the social media era in the Nursing Study Program,
Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo.
The study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of
36 respondents were taken using the total sampling technique. The instruments
used were the body shaming questionnaire and the Indonesian version of the
General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). Data analysis used the chi-square test with α
= 0.05.
The results showed that 83.3% of respondents experienced low-moderate body
shaming, and 58.3% had high self-efficacy. There was a significant relationship
between body shaming and self-efficacy (p-value = 0.003), indicating that the
higher the body shaming, the lower the self-efficacy.
In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between body shaming and self-
efficacy levels in female adolescents. This finding emphasizes the importance of
education and social support in preventing the negative impacts of body shaming
and increasing students' self-efficacy.
