Abstract

Cintia Oktavia Sari. Analysis of Differences in Students' Mathematics Anxiety in Solving Mathematical Problems Based on Field Dependent and Field Independent Cognitive Styles. Thesis. Departement of Mathematics Education, Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo. Advisor 1 Dr. Sumaji, M.Pd., Advisor 2 Dr. Arta Ekayanti, M.Sc.

This study aims to: (1) analyze the level of mathematics anxiety experienced by students with a Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style in solving mathematical problems; (2) analyze the level of mathematics anxiety in students with a Field Independent (FI) cognitive style; and (3) determine the differences in mathematics anxiety between students with FD and FI cognitive styles when solving mathematical problems.
This research employed a qualitative approach and was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Babadan, with the primary subjects being students from class VII-A. Data collection techniques included a cognitive style test using the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), a mathematical problem-solving test, and interviews. The data sources consisted of GEFT results, problem-solving test results, and interview transcripts. Data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The results showed that students with a Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style tended to experience high levels of mathematics anxiety, influenced by external factors such as reliance on social environments, and internal factors such as low self-confidence and difficulty in understanding mathematical concepts. In contrast, students with a Field Independent (FI) cognitive style experienced mild to moderate levels of anxiety, mainly due to internal challenges such as difficulty recalling solution steps, but were supported by effective self-regulation strategies. Overall, FI students demonstrated a stronger ability to solve mathematical problems systematically and confidently compared to FD students, who relied more on external support and struggled to organize complex information. These findings confirm that cognitive style plays a significant role in shaping students' levels of anxiety and their ability to face and solve mathematical problems.
