Benign tumors such as Fibroadenoma Mammae (FAM) are commonly found in adolescents and are characterized by small, painless lumps. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is important for early detection, but adolescents often lack the necessary skills to perform it properly. Simulation-based education is considered effective in improving BSE skills.
This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach involving 57 eleventh-grade science students selected through proportionate random sampling. Data were collected using a BSE skills observation checklist and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of < 0.05 to determine the effect of simulation-based Breast Self-Examination education on adolescents’ skill levels in early breast tumor detection.
The results showed that prior to the simulation education, the majority of participants (52 students or 91.2%) were categorized as unskilled. After the intervention, 31 students (54.4%) demonstrated improved BSE skills. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant effect of simulation education on improving adolescents’ skills in early detection of breast tumors.
Simulation-based education on Breast Self-Examination has proven effective in improving adolescent girls' skills in the early detection of breast tumors. It is recommended that this method be implemented regularly as a promotive and preventive effort for adolescents, with greater emphasis on the AIETA stages.
