Anton Winaryo. Improving Conceptual Understanding of Arithmetic Algebraic Forms Through the CUPs Learning Model in Class VII A Students of SMP Negeri 2 Badegan Ponorogo. Thesis. Conceptual understanding is a crucial element in the learning process. According to the mathematics teacher of Class VII A, students often make mistakes in basic arithmetic operations and in manipulating algebraic forms. Therefore, this study aims to describe the implementation of the CUPs learning model to improve students’ conceptual understanding of arithmetic algebraic forms and to determine the extent of the improvement in conceptual understanding through this model among Class VII A students of SMP Negeri 2 Badegan Ponorogo.
This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects were 25 students from Class VII A SMP Negeri 2 Badegan Ponorogo. Data were collected using tests, observations, and documentation.
The CUPs learning model was implemented through three stages: individual completion of student worksheets (LKPD), discussion group (triplet phase), and class discussion. The research was conducted in two cycles. In Cycle I, the results were not optimal. In Cycle II, several improvements were made, including providing learning motivation, using open-ended questions, conducting reflection at the end of the lesson, delivering moral messages, and increasing supervision and support for student participation. The results of Cycle II showed an increase in the average conceptual understanding test scores from 58.87% to 83.40%. The implementation rate of the learning process improved from 81.25% and 84.21% in Cycle I to 100% in both meetings of Cycle II. Student activity also increased from 70.50% to 84.75%. These improvements made the learning process more effective and directly contributed to enhancing students’ conceptual understanding. Thus, the CUPs learning model can improve students’ conceptual understanding of arithmetic algebraic forms in Class VII A SMP Negeri 2 Badegan Ponorogo.
