Abstract

Fossil fuels such as petroleum, natural gas, and coal are non-renewable energy sources and pose significant challenges, particularly in terms of frequent global price increases during energy crises. The primary causes of this crisis include the depletion of energy reserves over time due to sustained exploitation, a significant increase in global energy demand, limited supply security guarantees, and production restrictions driven by concerns over environmental impacts, particularly global warming. Therefore, a shift toward the utilization of renewable energy sources as an alternative to fossil fuels is necessary. One potential option is the use of bioethanol, an alternative fuel derived from biological sources and known to be more environmentally friendly. The method used in this study is research anddevelopment involving the production process of bioethanol, namely fermentation and distillation. During the fermentation stage, tape yeast is used, the equipment for the distillation process is a microwave, while the main raw materials are cassava and sugarcane molasses. Biodiesel properties are tested to measure the ethanol content, flash point, RON value, and calorific value. The table shows a comparison of ethanol from cassava and molasses. Cassava has a higher ethanol content (87%) while cassava has an ethanol content of 85%, a higher calorific value (29807 J/kg), a higher flash point (1°C), and a higher RON value (1 Sugarcane molasses has a higher ethanol content (87%) while cassava has an ethanol content of 85%, a higher calorific value (29,807 J/kg), a higher flash point (1°C), and a higher octane number (RON) (114) compared to cassava. Bioethanol fuel produced from sugarcane molasses has alternative properties as a renewable energy source because sugarcane molasses can be produced sustainably. Further testing is needed on the characteristics of bioethanol, octane rating, calorific value, flash point, octane number (RON), and combustion emissions to strengthen the feasibility of using bioethanol as a fuel. Further testing is needed on the characteristics of bioethanol, octane rating, calorific value, flash point, octane number (RON), and combustion emissions to strengthen the feasibility of using bioethanol as a fuel for motor vehicles.
