Muhadharah, commonly known as speech practice, serves as a platform to train students' public speaking skills and provides an effective approach to foster active learning that engages students in the educational process. The researcher was interested in this topic because the activity closely aligns with the concept of learning through direct practice, allowing students to gain knowledge from their own experiences. This corresponds to the constructivist learning theory developed by John Dewey, which emphasizes learning through practical experience.
This study aims to describe the implementation of muhadharah as a habituation program in educational institutions, the outcomes of this program on students’ public speaking skills, and the supporting and inhibiting factors involved in its implementation. By analyzing muhadharah through the lens of constructivism, this research seeks to offer new insights into applicable learning methods in schools.
This research uses a qualitative approach with a field study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations of the muhadharah habituation program, and relevant documentation. The findings were analyzed using Dewey’s constructivist theory and further supported by Albert Bandura’s social learning theory and Aristotle’s rhetoric theory. The results show that the application of the learning by doing method in the muhadharah habituation program at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Magetan effectively engages students in an active, participatory, and experience-based learning process. The program significantly helps shape students’ confidence and improves their public speaking skills. Furthermore, the supporting and inhibiting factors are part of a broader learning process that helps students develop character, build courage, and learn from experience.
