Abstract
The condition of elderly individuals differs from those in their productive age because older adults are more vulnerable to systemic and metabolic health issues, making it more difficult for them to perform daily activities. Therefore, they often require assistance from others in carrying out these activities. With the help of an elderly communication aid based on the Internet of Things (IoT), the elderly can more easily communicate when they need assistance with eating, using the bathroom, or other needs. This study aims to determine how to develop a communication aid for the elderly based on the Internet of Things. The method used in this research includes planning, designing, and testing the communication aid. The planning phase involves designing the device, creating circuit modules, and selecting electronic components. The design phase includes building the frame, assembling the microcontroller circuit, integrating the frame with the microcontroller circuit, and developing the software using programming in the Arduino Uno IDE. The results of the study show that the communication aid was developed by designing an electronic circuit that integrates sensors with the ESP8266 WiFi module. The designed device allows the elderly to send commands to the message receiver through the internet network. The system design process involved identifying the needs of elderly users through interview studies, planning the hardware and software designs, designing the hardware and software components, and integrating the system with an internet-based application, namely Telegram. The test results of the communication aid show that the device can deliver messages or notifications in real-time as long as it is connected to a stable internet network and the distance does not exceed 70 meters. The device is able to respond quickly when the button is pressed by the message sender, and the notification can be received by the recipient. The recipient can also respond via Telegram, and the sender can see the reply on the LCD screen. However, the communication aid still depends on internet connectivity and power supply conditions.
