ABSTRACT
MENTAL NURSING CARE FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA PATIENTS
WITH CHRONIC LOW SELF-ESTEEM
NURSING PROBLEMS
(Case study at Dr. Arif Zainudin Surakarta Mental Hospital)

Low self-esteem is a condition in which an individual evaluates themselves negatively and underestimates their abilities, feeling that their actions do not meet expectations. If chronic low self-esteem is left untreated over time, it may lead to negative impacts such as a loss of interest in social interaction. This case study aims to provide an overview of nursing care for a patient with schizophrenia experiencing the nursing problem of chronic low self-esteem at RSJD Dr. Arif Zainudin Surakarta.

This nursing care was provided from June 4-7, 2025, in the Sena Room of Dr. Arif Zainudin Mental Hospital, Surakarta, using a nursing process approach that includes assessment, data analysis, nursing diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation.

The assessment revealed that the patient felt embarrassed and inferior due to failure in employment and worsening economic conditions, which triggered chronic low self-esteem. Nursing interventions were based on the SIKI for promoting self-esteem, including identifying statements related to self-esteem, discussing reasons for self-criticism, practicing positive self-affirmations, identifying and enhancing positive abilities, and maintaining eye contact. Some interventions were not implemented, such as encouraging openness to negative criticism, teaching strategies to cope with bullying, training to improve confidence in handling situations, and involving the family in the care process. The evaluation results showed that the nursing problem of chronic low self-esteem could be resolved after four days of nursing intervention.

This nursing care for a patient with chronic low self-esteem is expected to provide a framework for nurses, particularly in the care of schizophrenia patients with chronic low self-esteem.
