APPLICATION OF SLOW DEEP BREATHING THERAPY IN POST
OPERATIVE FRACTURE PATIENTS WITH ACUTE PAIN NURSING
PROBLEMS

A fracture is a break in the continuity of the bone structure. Fractures occur due to
trauma such as traffic accidents and sports injuries. Fracture treatment includes
surgery which causes pain. The main problem that arises after fracture surgery is
pain. Slow deep breathing therapy can affect the patient's pain. The aim of this study
was to determine the effectiveness of slow deep breathing therapy in post-fracture
surgery patients with acute pain nursing problems.
The method used was a nursing process approach carried out on one patient
managed with a medical diagnosis of close fracture metacarpal 4-5 manus dextra.
The nursing problem is acute pain because the patient complains of pain in the right
hand. Nursing care was carried out in the Mas Mansur room at RSUM Ponorogo
on 29 July – 31 July 2025 and at the patient's home on 1 & 2 August 2025.
The results of the assessment showed that the patient complained of pain in the right
hand with a pain scale of 6. The nursing action taken to reduce pain was teaching
non-pharmacological techniques by applying slow deep breathing therapy. After
slow deep breathing therapy, pain decreased from scale 6 to scale 1.
Slow deep breathing therapy can reduce pain intensity in post-fracture surgery
patients with acute pain management issues. It is recommended that post-fracture
surgery patients utilize slow deep breathing therapy, as it offers numerous benefits
and is free from side effects.
