Abstract

Visually impaired individuals face challenges in mobility and independence, especially when shopping in cooperatives or campus environments. This research designs and implements a smart cane as an assistive tool for the blind to support mobility and product identification at the Muhammadiyah University Ponorogo Cooperative. The mobility system employs an ultrasonic sensor connected to an Arduino Nano, with output in the form of vibrations on the cane handle when detecting obstacles. Meanwhile, the product identification system utilizes an RFID reader on the box, RFID tags on product shelves, and a Raspberry Pi connected to the cooperative’s database to generate product information in audio form via a headset. The test results show that the mobility system achieved a sensor accuracy rate of 97.8% with an average error of 2.2%, while the product identification system successfully operated with 100% accuracy. This research proves that the integration of ultrasonic sensors and RFID can enhance the independence of visually impaired students in mobility and shopping, as well as contribute to providing disability-friendly facilities within the university environment.
