Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that spreads through inhalation. In cases of pulmonary TB, ineffective airway clearance often occurs due to the accumulation of secretions that are difficult to expel. This case discusses the application of warm steam therapy with eucalyptus oil to help facilitate sputum secretion in pediatric pulmonary TB patients with ineffective airway clearance.
Nursing care was provided in the A.R. Fahrudin Room of the Muhammadiyah General Hospital in Ponorogo for 5 days, from August 17 to 21, 2025. The method used was a nursing process approach for An.A with respiratory tract clearance issues.
The assessment revealed that the client's family reported that the child had a hacking cough accompanied by shortness of breath, and the child was unable to cough and expel sputum. An alternative treatment using eucalyptus oil vapor therapy to improve airway clearance and facilitate sputum production in children with pulmonary tuberculosis was administered for 5 days. The results showed that this therapy improved airway clearance. Previously, patients were unable to expel sputum and cough effectively, but after treatment, they were able to cough effectively.
.
The implementation of this intervention in patients with ineffective airway clearance is expected to serve as a safe, affordable, and easy-to-apply nursing alternative that can be self-administered when such symptoms recur.
