Abstract

APPLICATION OF FOOT EXERCISES IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS
PATIENTS WITH BLOOD GLUCOSE INSTABILITY

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by
hyperglycemia due to insulin resistance and/or impaired insulin secretion.
Uncontrolled blood glucose levels can increase the risk of complications,
particularly in the lower extremities, such as neuropathy and diabetic foot ulcers.
One non-pharmacological intervention that nurses can implement is diabetic foot
exercises, which aim to improve blood circulation.
This study used a case study design with a nursing process approach. The
subject was a patient with diabetes mellitus (DM) with a blood sugar level of 674
mg/dl. The diabetic foot exercises were performed once daily for five consecutive
days. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations,
and blood sugar checks. Nursing care was provided in the K.H. Ahmad Dahlan
Ward, Muhammadiyah Ponorogo General Hospital, from November 10-14, 2025.
The results of the study showed a decrease in blood glucose levels on the
last day after foot exercises, from 674 mg/dL to 293 mg/dL. There was an
improvement in blood glucose stability and a decrease in symptoms of
hyperglycemia in the patient. Diabetic foot exercises are effective in lowering blood
glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus with unstable blood glucose levels.
This therapy can be recommended as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention
to support the reduction of blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus.
