Abstract

Acute pain in patients with colic abdomen could cause discomfort, increase anxiety, and interfere with daily activities. Non-pharmacological methods such as Benson Relaxation and music therapy had been shown to help accelerate the reduction of pain perception. This case study aimed to describe the effectiveness of combining these two techniques in patients with acute pain.
This case study was conducted on one inpatient at Puskesmas Maospati Magetan who had been diagnosed with acute pain due to colic abdomen. The interventions consisted of scheduled sessions of Benson Relaxation and music therapy throughout the treatment period. Pain intensity was evaluated using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and complemented by a PQRST assessment and vital signs monitoring to observe physiological responses.
The results showed a consistent decrease in pain intensity from the first to the last day of treatment. At the final evaluation, the patient reached an NRS score of 0, which meant that the patient did not feel any pain at the time of measurement. The patient also appeared more relaxed, was able to rest better, and experienced no adverse effects during the interventions. Pain improvement was associated with activation of the relaxation response, which reduced sympathetic nervous system stimulation, as well as the distraction effect of music therapy, which shifted attention away from pain sensations.
The combination of Benson Relaxation and music therapy proved to be easy to apply, safe, and supportive in pain management. The effectiveness of these combined interventions significantly reduced pain intensity, improved patient comfort, and produced no adverse effects.
