Hyperthermia in toddlers aged 6 months to 5 years is highly susceptible to febrile seizures. Hyperthermia in children must be addressed immediately to prevent recurrent seizures, which can lead to serious complications. One method of managing hyperthermia that can be implemented in nursing care is warm water tepid sponge compresses. This compress combines a compression block method for superficial blood vessels and wiping with a cloth moistened with warm water. The purpose of this case study was to determine the application of warm water tepid sponge compresses in children with febrile seizures and hyperthermia nursing problems.
This research method uses a nursing care process approach for a 4-year-old toddler with febrile seizures and hyperthermia nursing problems, including assessment, diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The study was conducted over four days, from June 12, 2026, to June 15, 2026, in the Marwa Room of 'Aisyiyah Ponorogo General Hospital. Data collection was conducted through interviews, observation, physical examination, and documentation. The intervention involved applying warm compresses with a water tepid sponge once a day for 15 minutes while the patient had a fever.
The patient's assessment revealed an elevated body temperature of 38.7°C, post-seizure, tachypnea, tachycardia, and red, warm skin. The nursing intervention included hyperthermia management using warm compresses with a water tepid sponge. After four days of implementation, the study results showed the patient's body temperature returned to normal at 36.5°C, there were no recurrences of seizures, the skin was no longer red, the respiratory rate and pulse rate improved, and the child felt comfortable. The application of warm compresses with a water tepid sponge was also safe, with no skin irritation observed.
The conclusion of this case study is that the application of warm compresses with a water tepid sponge to a pediatric patient with febrile seizures and hyperthermia nursing problems has been proven effective in lowering body temperature back to normal, thus resolving the hyperthermia problem.
