APPLICATION OF KANGAROO MOTHER CARE (KMC) ON BREASTFEEDING SUCCESS IN LOW BIRTH WEIGHT (LBW) INFANTS WITH INEFFECTIVE BREASTFEEDING NURSING PROBLEMS AT THE PERINATOLOGY WARD OF RSU ‘AISYIYAH PONOROGO

Low Birth Weight (LBW) infants often experience organ and reflex immaturity, one of which is a weak sucking reflex. This condition triggers the emergence of the nursing problem of ineffective breastfeeding. One non-pharmacological intervention to optimize breastfeeding success and meet nutritional requirements in LBW infants is the application of the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method. The purpose of this case study is to determine nursing care through the implementation of KMC in addressing ineffective breastfeeding in LBW infants at RSU ‘Aisyiyah Ponorogo.
This research utilized a descriptive case study design with a nursing care approach comprising assessment, nursing diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The subject of this case study was Baby of Mrs. M with a medical diagnosis of LBW (birth weight of 2,300 grams) and the nursing problem of ineffective breastfeeding. The KMC intervention was performed through regular skin-to-skin contact between mother and infant for ±3 hours per session daily over 5 days of care.
Initial assessment results indicated that the infant's sucking reflex was weak, latching onto the breast was not yet effective, and was supported by maternal factors in the form of inverted nipples. Following nursing implementation in the form of a combination of lactation technique education and KMC application over 5 days, evaluation results showed that the infant's sucking reflex increased, latching onto the mother's breast improved, the mother became more confident, and breast milk intake became more optimal.
The conclusion of this case study is that the implementation of the KMC method is proven effective in improving breastfeeding success in LBW infants with ineffective breastfeeding. It is recommended for health professionals in the perinatology ward to continuously educate and motivate parents to routinely practice KMC, both during hospitalization and post-discharge at home.
