ABSTRACT
The increasing amount of waste from Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) and eggshells that has
not been optimally utilized has the potential to cause environmental problems. One effort to
address this issue is to process these wastes into composite materials with higher functional value.
This study aims to analyze the effect of adding eggshell powder filler on the tensile strength,
impact strength, and macrostructure of ACP waste-based composites. The research utilized
polyester (PE) ACP waste, aluminum powder, and 100-mesh eggshell powder, which were
fabricated using the hot-press method at a temperature of 100°C and a pressure of 300 psi. The
composition variations were determined using the Design of Experiment (DOE) method. Tensile
testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM D638 Type IV, impact testing was performed
based on ASTM D256, and macrostructural observations were carried out to evaluate the material
characteristics. The results showed that the material composition significantly affected the
mechanical properties of the composites. The highest tensile strength of 9.88 MPa was obtained
from the composition of 30% PE, 35% eggshell powder, and 35% aluminum, while the lowest
tensile strength of 1.11 MPa was obtained from the composition of 45% PE, 10.86% eggshell
powder, and 44.14% aluminum. Macrostructural observations indicated that homogeneous filler
distribution and good interfacial bonding enhanced stress transfer capability and material
toughness. In conclusion, the addition of eggshell powder at an appropriate composition can
improve the mechanical properties of ACP waste-based composites and has the potential to serve
as an environmentally friendly alternative material.
