THE EFFECT OF EDUCATION ON STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE OF
EARTHQUAKE DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

Earthquakes are natural disasters that can cause loss of life, environmental
damage, and material losses. One way to mitigate these impacts is to improve
disaster preparedness knowledge through education. This study aims to analyze the
effect of education using PowerPoint presentations and leaflets on earthquake
disaster preparedness
knowledge among 10th-grade students at SMA
Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. This study employed a pre-experimental design using
a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study population consisted of all 204
10th-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo, with a sample of 67
respondents selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using
a questionnaire on earthquake disaster preparedness knowledge and analyzed
using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test with a significance level of α < 0.05. Before
receiving the education, the respondents’ knowledge levels were predominantly in
the “poor” category (24 respondents, 35.8%), the “adequate” category (22
respondents, 32.8%), and the “good” category (21 respondents, 31.3%). After
receiving education, the majority of respondents fell into the “good” category (57
respondents, 85.1%), followed by the “adequate” category (8 respondents, 11.9%),
and the “poor” category (2 respondents, 3.0%). The results of the Wilcoxon Signed
Rank Test showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant increase in
knowledge following the educational intervention. Education using PowerPoint
presentations and leaflets had a significant effect on improving knowledge of
earthquake disaster preparedness among 10th-grade students at SMA
Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo; therefore, these materials can be used as health
education tools to enhance disaster preparedness in the school environment.
