The social environment plays a crucial role in shaping smoking behavior in
adolescents. Adolescence is a period of identity discovery, making adolescents more
susceptible to the influence of family, peers, and society, which can encourage
smoking behavior. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the social
environment and smoking behavior among students at SMP Negeri 2 Dolopo,
Madiun Regency.
This study used a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional
approach. The study population was all 80 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2
Dolopo, Madiun Regency, with a sample size of 67 respondents selected using
stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire and
analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of α = 0.05.
The results showed that the majority of respondents (39 respondents) had a
positive social environment, while the majority (38 respondents) had positive
smoking behavior. The Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05), thus
rejecting H₀ and accepting H₁. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a relationship
between the social environment and smoking behavior among students at SMP
Negeri 2 Dolopo, Madiun Regency.
The results of this study indicate that a positive social environment is
associated with positive smoking behavior. Therefore, schools are expected to
maintain their Smoke-Free Area (KTR) policies and increase education about the
dangers of smoking. Furthermore, students are expected to gradually reduce
smoking behavior by participating in various positive activities at home and at
school.
