Abstract

ABSTRACK

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FEAR OF FALLING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AMONG THE ELDERLY IN THE KRAJAN HALL POSYANDU FOR THE ELDERLY IN THE WORKING AREA OF THE KEDUNGBENDO COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER IN PACITAN
By: Apriliya Nurjannah
The aging process causes various physiological changes, such as decreased muscle strength, balance, and functional ability, which can increase the risk of falls in the elderly. This condition can lead to fear of falling, which is an excessive fear or worry about the possibility of falling while performing daily activities. Fear of falling can cause the elderly to limit physical activity, thereby accelerating the decline in body function, increasing dependency, and reducing quality of life. This study aims to analyze the relationship between fear of falling and physical activity in the elderly at the Posyandu Lansia Dusun Krajan in the working area of the Kedungbendo Community Health Center in Pacitan.
This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 83 elderly people, with a sample of 69 elderly people selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) and the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) instruments, then analyzed using univariate analysis and the Spearman Rank test with a significance level of α = 0.05.
The results showed that almost all respondents had a high fear of falling (88.4%), while the majority of respondents had moderate physical activity (65.2%). The Spearman Rank test showed a significant relationship between fear of falling and physical activity in the elderly (p = 0.003; r = -0.354), with a negative relationship and weak strength. This indicates that the higher the fear of falling, the lower the physical activity of the elderly tends to be.
Research findings indicate that although most older adults have a high fear of falling, the majority still have moderate levels of physical activity. Therefore, preventative measures through education, balance training, and safe physical activity are needed to reduce fear of falling and maintain functional ability in older adults.
