An understanding of mathematical concepts is an essential skill for students as a foundation for solving mathematical problems. However, there are still students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo who struggle to understand math problems, particularly when interpreting the information in the problems and explaining mathematical concepts in their own words. This situation indicates that students’ understanding of mathematical concepts is not yet optimal. One factor suspected of influencing the understanding of mathematical concepts is linguistic intelligence, as the ability to understand and use language plays a role in interpreting terms, symbols, and information found in mathematics learning. This research aims to analyze the effect of linguistic intelligence on students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and to describe the extent of the effect of linguistic intelligence on students’ understanding of mathematical concepts at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo.
This research employed a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design. The research was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo with a sample of 27 students from Class XII 4, selected using cluster random sampling. Research data were collected through questionnaires and tests. The research instruments included a linguistic intelligence questionnaire and a mathematical concept comprehension test. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, tests of analytical assumptions (including tests for normality, linearity, and heteroscedasticity) and hypothesis testing using simple linear regression analysis with the assistance of PASW Statistics 18.
The results of the research indicate that there is a significant relationship between linguistic intelligence and students’ understanding of mathematical concepts, with a p-value of 0.019 < 0.05. The regression equation obtained is Y = 14.202 + 0.181X, which indicates that linguistic intelligence has a positive effect on mathematical concept understanding, as evidenced by the positive value of the coefficient of X, which is 0.181. The magnitude of the effect of linguistic intelligence on mathematical concept understanding is indicated by the coefficient of determination (R^2) of 0.201, or 20.1%, while 79.9% is influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. Thus, it can be concluded that linguistic intelligence has a positive and significant effect on the mathematical concept comprehension of Class XII 4 at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo.
