Abstract
Prolonged hyperuricemia in the elderly population frequently triggers persistent joint inflammation that leads to chronic pain and diminished comfort, necessitating low‑risk non‑pharmacological intervention approaches. Using a nursing care approach centered primarily on shallot compresses, this report describes its application in an older adult with the nursing problem of chronic pain, aiming to reduce pain and improve comfort. Implementation took place from July 27–31, 2026 at Wisma Pandu, UPT PSTW Magetan, with data gathered through interviews, observation, physical examination, and review of clinical documentation.
Assessment of Ms. S, aged 85, led to a nursing diagnosis of Chronic Pain (D.0078) associated with long‑term musculoskeletal impairment. As the primary intervention, shallot compresses were applied for 15 minutes per session, once daily, for 5 consecutive days. Over the study period, the pain score decreased gradually from 5 to 1 an approximate 80% reduction accompanied by fewer pained facial expressions and improved comfort.
These results are consistent with the actions of quercetin and kaempferol in shallots, which inhibit COX and LOX inflammatory signaling pathways, alongside thermal effects that promote vasodilation and activate gate control pain modulation. In conclusion, shallot compresses effectively reduce chronic pain intensity in older adults with joint inflammation due to urate crystal buildup, warranting its recommendation as a standalone nursing intervention suitable for sustained routine use by institutional care providers.
