Temper tantrums are common behavioral problems in playgroup-aged children (2–4 years old) and may interfere with emotional and social development. Parenting style is one of the contributing factors to temper tantrum behavior. Inappropriate parenting styles, such as authoritarian and permissive parenting, may increase emotional dysregulation, while democratic parenting supports healthier emotional development in children.
This study aimed to examine the relationship between parenting styles and the occurrence of temper tantrums in playgroup-aged children at TK Bayt Al Mubarok, Ponorogo District, Ponorogo Regency. A quantitative observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The study population consisted of all playgroup children at TK Bayt Al Mubarok, with 40 children selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using validated parenting style and temper tantrum questionnaires and analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test.
The results showed that democratic parenting have 23 children (57.5%) with moderate temper tantrums, while 4 children (10%) did not. The Spearman rank test coefficient value was 0.001 < 0.05, indicating a relationship between parenting style and temper tantrums in playgroup-aged children (2–4 years old).
Temper tantrums are explosive, uncontrolled outbursts of emotion. Therefore, parents are encouraged to implement appropriate parenting styles, particularly democratic parenting, to help reduce temper tantrums and support optimal emotional development in children.. Parents are encouraged to apply democratic parenting strategies to reduce temper tantrum behavior and support optimal emotional development.
