Abstract

Manual recording of blood pressure measurements often leads to delays in healthcare services and creates opportunities for data entry errors. This study aims to design and build an ESP32 microcontroller-based digital blood pressure monitor capable of automatic measurement and real-time data logging through integration with an Android application and Google Sheets. The device utilizes the oscillometric method for the non-invasive detection of systolic and diastolic pressures. Key components include the MPX5050DP pressure sensor, a micro air pump, a solenoid valve, and an OLED display. The system leverages the ESP32's Wi-Fi connectivity to transmit measurement results to a mobile application developed using MIT App Inventor, which subsequently stores the data in a spreadsheet-based database. Technical testing results indicate that the MPX5050DP pressure sensor achieves high accuracy, with an average measurement difference of 0.632 mmHg compared to a standard commercial device. Clinical testing, stratified by age group, yielded average error rates of 3.48% for systolic and 2.28% for diastolic readings among subjects under 50 years of age. Conversely, for the group aged over 50, the average error rates rose to 6.97% for systolic and 5.29% for diastolic readings, a trend attributed to physiological changes such as increased aortic stiffness in the elderly. Overall, the system successfully enables the automated, rapid, and efficient digitization of medical records.
