Abstract

ABSTRACT
The electric car, named Samandiman, is the work and innovation of mechanical engineering students at Muhammadiyah University, Ponorogo. Everything from design to manufacture is done by the students themselves, the components are also obtained around Ponorogo. In construction planning, strict material selection is always carried out so that the right materials are used. One of the important components to drive the wheels is the axel shaft.
The axle shaft is made of ST 45 steel, this steel is medium carbon steel and this material wears easily so to reduce wear it is given a hardening heat treatment. Hardening is one of the methods used to increase wear resistance. This research can see that. It is known that the hardness value has the lowest value without treatment with a value of 2,4 HRC . while the highest was given salt water cooling with a content of 10% with an average value of 10,8 HRC, and the value from air cooling was 6 HRC, while SAE40 oil got a value of 10,6.HRC From here we can see the highest value was given water cooling. salt as much as 10% with a value of 10,8 HRC. This result is the effect of the rapid cooling produced by the salt water. The research results show that the hardness of steel using water media is higher compared to other media.
