This study aims to describe the role of social media in combating the spread of hoax leading up to the 2024 Presidential elections, focusing on the Instagram account @turnbackhoaxid. The study identifies the activities of this account based on five characteristics of social media according to Antony Mayfield, namely participation, openness, conversation, community, and connectivity. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observing the activities of the account and interviewing the account management team.
The results show that the Instagram account @turnbackhoaxid actively plays a role in combating hoax ahead of the 2024 Presidential elections through consistent publication of clarification and educational content. Through these activities, this social media platform effectively reduces the impact of hoax on society and enhances public understanding in identifying misinformation. The implications of this research underscore the importance of utilizing social media as an effective communication and information tool to enhance critical thinking skills among the public and mitigate the influence of hoax.
