This thesis aimed to analyze the impact of football commentary on the
English listening skills of football fans in Ponorogo, Indonesia. Specifically, it
examined the perception of football fans in Ponorogo regarding the commentary of
Premier League football matches and its effect on their English listening skills. The
study employed a qualitative method, using semi-structured interviews with 12
participants. The interviews were conducted in Indonesian and were transcribed
verbatim. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, with the themes
identified through the coding process.
The results of the study show that football fans in Ponorogo perceive
football commentary as a significant factor in improving their English listening
skills. The study found that fans in Ponorogo encounter several challenges in
comprehending listening to football commentary during Premier League matches,
including unfamiliarity with football commentary, different accents and
pronunciation, technical terms and jargon, fast-paced commentary, and cultural and
contextual factors. The study also found that fans in Ponorogo use various strategies
to overcome these challenges, including listening to football commentary regularly,
using online resources, watching football matches, practicing English language
skills, joining a language learning community, using flashcards, practicing active
listening, using visual aids, practicing summarization, and practicing critical
thinking.
The study concludes that football commentary can be a valuable tool for
improving English listening skills among football fans in Ponorogo, but that fans
may encounter challenges in comprehending the commentary due to various
factors. The study suggests that fans in Ponorogo can use various strategies to
overcome these challenges and improve their English listening skills.
