Abstract
Caring is a core component of nursing practice that encompasses patients' physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. For preoperative patients, nurse caring can help manage anxiety and enhance their mental preparedness before undergoing surgical procedures. This study aims to analyze the relationship between nurse caring and preoperative patient anxiety levels at Amal Sehat Wonogiri Hospital.
This study employed a cross-sectional design with a sample of 65 preoperative patients selected through purposive sampling. The instrument used to measure nurse caring was a questionnaire based on Swanson's (1991) theory, covering the aspects of maintaining belief, knowing, being with, doing for, and enabling. Meanwhile, patient anxiety was measured using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). The results indicated that almost all respondents (84.6%) reported receiving positive nurse caring (55 respondents), while a small proportion (15.4%) reported receiving negative nurse caring (10 respondents). Most patients experienced mild anxiety (56.9%), accounting for 37 respondents, whereas severe anxiety was reported by 6 respondents (9.2%). Statistical analysis using the Chi-Square test revealed a significant relationship between nurse caring and patient anxiety levels, with a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05) and a contingency coefficient of 0.457, indicating a moderate level of association.
In conclusion, nurse caring has a significant relationship with preoperative patient anxiety levels. Therefore, it is recommended that hospitals enhance training on nurse caring skills and integrate them into nursing performance assessments. Future research is encouraged to explore caring-based interventions in reducing preoperative patient anxiety.
