Abstract

Nonverbal communication plays a crucial role in social interactions, especially in educational settings for students with special needs at Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB) Negeri Jenangan Ponorogo. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of nonverbal communication used by teachers in delivering lesson materials to students with verbal communication limitations. This research employs a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, literature studies, and documentation. The informants in this study consist of the head of SLB Negeri Jenangan Ponorogo, a third-grade teacher, and a fifth-grade student with an intellectual disability (who is still able to communicate well). The data analysis techniques involve data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal that nonverbal communication, such as facial expressions and hand gestures, significantly aids in enhancing students' understanding and engagement. Additionally, nonverbal communication contributes to building emotional connections between teachers and students, which is crucial for children with special needs. Various barriers in verbal and nonverbal communication were identified, which can affect the learning process. This study emphasizes that a combination of verbal and nonverbal communication supports the learning process, and teachers in SLB must adapt their teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of their students. These findings provide valuable insights for developing more effective teaching strategies in special education schools.
