Abstract

Exhaust emissions from motorcycles are one of the main factors causing air pollution, especially in densely populated urban areas with a high number of vehicles in urban environments. The content of toxic substances, namely carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) released from combustion. There is an innovation developed to reduce these emissions, namely a catalytic converter. With the presence of natural materials that can reduce vehicle exhaust emissions, namely the rain tree. The rain tree, especially the rain tree leaves, can absorb emissions from motorcycles. Charcoal from the activation of rain tree leaves can increase the absorption of emission output, especially carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). In this study, an activated charcoal converter catalyst from rain tree leaves was used which was burned at a temperature of 400℃, then the rain tree leaf charcoal powder was activated using a calcium chloride solution CaCl 2 compacted in the exhaust pipe of motor vehicles and given holes so that the flow of hot temperature from the emission output can be absorbed by the activated charcoal of rain tree leaves, then testing was carried out using a Gas Analyzer Tester, Noise Tester and temperature. The results of the study showed that the standard exhaust had the highest exhaust gas emissions of CO (0.80%), HC (167 ppm), CO2 (10.9%), O2 (1.61%), while the exhaust modified with activated charcoal of trembesi leaves had CO (0.75%), HC (173 ppm), CO2 (10.7%), O2 (1.52%). The highest noise level was in the standard model with a value of 88.8 dB while the lowest noise level was in the modified model with activated charcoal of trembesi leaves with a value of 79.7 dB. The highest temperature was in the modified model with activated charcoal of trembesi leaves with a value of 158 ℃ while the lowest temperature was in the standard model with a value of 90 ℃.
