Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has led to a significant increase in the use of online games, particularly among adolescents. Online gaming has become a popular form of entertainment; however, high gaming intensity may negatively impact psychological well-being, especially in terms of emotional control. Adolescence is a critical period of emotional development, making teenagers more vulnerable to emotional dysregulation when exposed to excessive gaming.
This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational analytic design and a cross-sectional approach. A total of 48 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using two instruments: an online gaming intensity questionnaire and an emotional control questionnaire based on the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). The data were analyzed using the Chi-Square statistical test with a significance level of 0.05.
Most respondents had a moderate level of online gaming intensity (26 students or 54.2%) and a moderate level of emotional control (28 students or 58.3%). The Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.025, indicating a significant relationship between online gaming intensity and emotional control among 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Sampung (p < 0.05).
This study concludes that there is a significant relationship between the intensity of online gaming and emotional control among adolescents. These findings highlight the importance of education and guidance from schools and parents in encouraging healthy gaming habits and improving adolescents' emotional regulation skills.
