Abstract
One factor closely related to hypertension in the elderly is sleep disturbance. Sleep disturbances in the elderly with hypertension can worsen blood pressure and reduce quality of life. One effective non-pharmacological intervention in addressing sleep disturbances is progressive muscle relaxation therapy. This study aimed to implement progressive muscle relaxation therapy in elderly patients with hypertension who presented with nursing problems related to sleep disturbances at the Tresna Werdha Social Services Unit (UPT).
The method used was a case study report with a nursing care approach. Therapy was provided for 5 days, from May 27-31, 2025. The instrument used to measure sleep quality was the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire.
The assessment revealed that the client complained of difficulty sleeping due to dizziness and neck pain, was dissatisfied with her sleep, and frequently woke up. Nursing interventions to address sleep disturbances in the client with hypertension included non-pharmacological progressive muscle relaxation therapy. After 5 days of Progressive Muscle Relaxation therapy, sleep quality improved, as evidenced by a decrease in the PSQI score from 14 (poor sleep quality) to 4, categorizing sleep quality as good.
In conclusion, progressive muscle relaxation therapy has proven effective as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention in improving sleep quality in elderly patients with hypertension. Nursing care for hypertensive clients with sleep disorders is expected to provide guidance for patients with hypertension in preventing and reducing symptoms of sleep disorders by implementing Progressive Muscle Relaxation.
