Abstract
Syalsafira, Dima. (2025) The Use of Artificial Intelligence in English Learning : Case Study in English Department. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has significantly shaped the landscape of education, particularly in English language learning at the university level. Tools such as QuillBot, Grammarly, Google Translate, and Duolingo have become part of students’ efforts to improve their language skills. This study seeks to determine which AI applications offer the most advantages, explore how English Department students at Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo incorporate these tools into their learning routines, and evaluate how their use influences academic outcomes.
This research utilizes a qualitative methodology through a case study approach. Data was gathered through a survey disseminated via Google Forms to students possessing experience with AI applications. Data analysis techniques categorized respondents' replies, subsequently employing the Miles and Huberman interactive model to minimize data redundancy, analyze the information, and derive conclusions.
The findings reveal that students make active use of a range of AI tools to support their academic work, especially in writing and comprehending English texts. QuillBot and Grammarly emerge as the most frequently used applications for enhancing language proficiency and avoiding plagiarism. When used thoughtfully, AI contributes positively to students’ motivation, confidence, and subject mastery. However, students are also aware of the limitations of these tools, such as inaccuracies in paraphrasing, which require them to critically evaluate the generated content. These insights suggest that AI can be a valuable learning aid when applied with discernment and critical reflection.
