Abstract
This study evaluates the potential of agave fiber as a natural reinforcement in composite materials and compares the tensile strength and macrostructural characteristics of agave fiber- and fiberglass-based composites with a polyester resin matrix. The specimens were prepared following ASTM D638 type 4 standards, with agave fibers subjected to a 5-hour alkali treatment to enhance adhesion. The polyester resin composition was maintained at 60%, while the remaining portion was varied between agave fiber and fiberglass. Tensile tests were conducted under pressures of 885 Pa and 1770 Pa, accompanied by macrostructural visual analysis using a smartphone camera. The results revealed that the composite with 40% fiberglass exhibited the highest tensile strength, reaching 30.27 MPa (885 Pa) and 32.35 MPa (1770 Pa). Meanwhile, the composite with 40% agave fiber also demonstrated notable performance with tensile strength values of 26.24 MPa and 30.31 MPa, along with the highest strain of 0.0145% and 0.0154%. The hybrid composition of 20% agave fiber and 20% fiberglass provided a balance between strength and flexibility. Furthermore, specimens tested under 1770 Pa showed smoother fracture patterns and fewer voids compared to those under 885 Pa, indicating an improvement in composite structural quality. These findings confirm that agave fiber has strong potential as an eco-friendly natural fiber alternative, making it suitable for lightweight structural applications such as motorcycle fenders or non-structural automotive panels.
