Abstract

In Law No. 22 of 2022 Article 1 Point 18 concerning Corrections, it is defined as a place that carries out the function of fostering inmates. The main purpose of corrections is to provide guidance that can shape the character of inmates, so that they not only serve a sentence but also undergo a significant process of personal transformation. A correctional facility is not merely a place to serve punishment, but also a means of comprehensive change and development that encompasses physical, mental, and social aspects. Through a rehabilitative approach, inmates are guided to recognize their mistakes, regret their actions, and prepare themselves to return to society productively.

However, in its implementation, there are still challenges such as the lack of public understanding regarding the role and objectives of corrections, which can hinder the process of social reintegration. Therefore, it is important to further examine the role of correctional facilities in fostering inmate character as well as efforts to build synergy between institutions and society to create an inclusive environment that supports the transformation of former inmates into individuals who can contribute positively to the nation.

This study aims to analyze how correctional facilities play a role in fostering inmates in order to realize social reintegration. The method used is normative juridical with a statute approach to address the issues under study. The results of this research show that the correctional system emphasizes the importance of collaboration between correctional officers, inmates, and society in supporting the process of change and behavioral recovery. The shift in the purpose of punishment towards rehabilitation is reflected in the existence of various programs that support the reintegration process, such as pre-release leave, conditional release, remission, assimilation, and others.
