Abstract
IMPLEMENTATION OF COMPREHENSIVE EXERCISE IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS WITH THE NURSING PROBLEM OF UNSTABLE BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS
By: Rosita Fitriana Dewi
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with an increasing prevalence and is often accompanied by the nursing problem of unstable blood glucose levels. This condition may increase the risk of both acute and chronic complications that can negatively affect patients' quality of life. One of the non-pharmacological interventions that can be applied to help control blood glucose levels is comprehensive exercise in the form of a structured walking program.
This study aimed to implement comprehensive exercise in a patient with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus experiencing the nursing problem of unstable blood glucose levels in the working area of Rejomulyo Public Health Center, Magetan Regency. This study employed a single-case study design using an evidence-based nursing process approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, documentation studies, and literature reviews. The intervention consisted of comprehensive exercise conducted for 21 days through a walking program that included warm-up exercises, moderate-intensity walking, and cool-down exercises.
The evaluation results showed an improvement in the patient's condition and a gradual reduction in blood glucose levels. Random blood glucose levels decreased from 311 mg/dL to 268 mg/dL in the first week, 224 mg/dL in the second week, and 168 mg/dL at the end of the third week. In addition, the patient's complaint of a burning sensation in the palms was reduced, and the patient was able to perform daily activities more independently.
The study concludes that the implementation of comprehensive exercise is effective in reducing blood glucose levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus who experience the nursing problem of unstable blood glucose levels. Therefore, it can be used as a safe, simple, and cost-effective independent nursing intervention.
