Hypertension is a common health problem among older adults and is associated with various cardiovascular complications. One factor that may contribute to the severity of hypertension is sleep quality. Poor sleep quality can increase sympathetic nervous system activity and stress hormone secretion, thereby affecting blood pressure regulation. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sleep quality and the degree of hypertension among elderly people in Gelanglor Village, Sukorejo District, Ponorogo Regency.
This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 60 elderly respondents were selected using a total sampling technique. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while the degree of hypertension was determined through blood pressure measurements. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test with a significance level of 0.05.
The results showed that most respondents had poor sleep quality (38 respondents; 63.3%) and grade 1 hypertension (31 respondents; 51.7%). Bivariate analysis revealed a p-value of 0.001 (p<0.05), indicating a significant relationship between sleep quality and the degree of hypertension among the elderly. Respondents with good sleep quality tended to have a lower degree of hypertension compared to those with poor sleep quality.
In conclusion, sleep quality is significantly associated with the degree of hypertension among elderly individuals. Improving sleep quality may serve as an important non-pharmacological strategy for hypertension management in older adults.
